Gulliver's Travels

Dienstencentrum Copernicus, Daguerrestraat 16, Den Haag

With Estehaagse Ensemble: James Hewitt and Xiangji Zeng (violin). ................................................................................................................................ Telemann's suite for two violins, 'Gulliver's travels', is inspired by the characters of Jonathan Swift's adventurous and colourful satire: the acrobatics of the tiny Lilliputans, the giant Brobdingnagians and the difficulty of playing their 'sixty foot long' spinet, the dream world of the Laputians with their head in the clouds, and the country of horses, with a dialogue between the wild Houyhnhnms and the tame Yahoos. The movements will be introduced with extracts read from Gulliver's Travels. ................................................................................................................................ 'Wave Prelude' for solo violin, by James Hewitt, is also inspired by imagery of sea and travel; it traces a harmonic journey where arpeggiations in irregular rhythms alternate with moments of free fantasy. The baroque 18th century duo is an intimate and conversational form, in which the two equal voices constantly mirror each other. The programme includes duos by Leclair, and canonic sonatas by Telemann, where the two parts imitate each other exactly. ................................................................................................................................
